Hmm - never thought of that, but you are correct. I got my chest-bar trailer so he could get his head down farther, being a smaller horse, (plus the low-angle, non-slip ramp). and I have never seen a horse try to get UNDER a hay manger, though I have seen them try to get under a chest bar...and get their heads caught under a chest bar when they put their head down reaching for some hay or something that may have fallen on the floor. This is very true -- I like my new trailer very much, but I wouldn't be comfortable hauling a pony, as the chest bar and tail bar would be too high. If I ever had the expectation of doing that (which I don't), I would have to have additional brackets welded in at the "proper" height, or have it fitted with the adjustable bracket option.
And horses are so **very** good at finding them .... The primary advantage that I have found to the straight load trailer with a hay manger is that it can most easily accommodate a variety of sizes of horse. I could put a12.2 hh pony in the same trailer as a 17.3 hh draft cross mare. I could even put them in the trailer next to each other, and not have to make a single adjustment. Yes, it is an extra tall, extra wide trailer (so it was big enough to accommodate the moose), but I don't have to make any changes to it to haul the pony equally as safely. And I have used it to haul everything in between those sizes as well. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
