Re: [RC] red ribbons - Kathy MayedaI had to say something similar to a dear friend on her first LD. She has a very forward horse and loves to blast past us up hills. We're used to it, but others will think it's rude. Anyway, she mostly rides with her husband and their horses are ALWAYS in each other's hind ends. She was trying use Beamer as a brake, and asked if it was okay. I just said that Beamer doesn't normally kick, but she will find out if it's okay or not before I do. (Beamer was getting a little testy about it....). She got the message and backed off. Later we were going uphill and got passed by another rider. Which of course set her horse off for the race and she lost control. She ended up walking all the way back to camp and RO'ing because she felt like she couldn't control her horse. Another reason not to blast uphills all the time - you have to be able to walk or trot them calmly to begin with, which is something she never does. And learning proper horse spacing and rating should become a habit, not something you just do when you're not riding with your husband. Needless to say she has no desire to do any more endurance riding. K. And I hope for the same respect for my horse (who is not a regular kicker, but will if a horse is ramming into her rear end). -- "Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die" Sandy Adams Deep Sands Arabians Deep Sands Gifts = =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
