We have mat's in our trailer and it does drain somewhat but we also use the shavings (not the chip's i don't think those work well). we usually haul 4-6 horses at a time and they poop allot then add the pee and you get a slippery mess and you get some gross (people) shoes as well. The shavings really cut down on the mess, make it smell much better ( really nice in the summer) and make clean up easier. We do not find shaving's on the horses but we try to always use fly masks as an extra precaution.

Well, I'll give my opinin on both subjects. 2 birds with one stone... LOL
Until my present trailer, all of my trailers have had pressure treated
lumber and matts for flooring. I didn't think it was hard to maintain this.
I usually only removed the matts once a year and made sure the floor was
clean and dry.
I have the rumber flooring in my trailer. In hindsight, I would not get it
again. While it is indestructable and should last forever. It does not
drain. I have a mule that pees in the trailer and if I don't want the
trailer smelling horrible, I have to rinse it out every time I haul.
Which brings me to the reason for shavings. Since the floor doesn't drain
(yes, some will run out the back but not all) I need something to absorb
the pee. And I also think no shaving can make the footing slippery for the
equines. I have ridden in my trailer to see how much air flow there was
with the various vents and windows open or closed, and did not notice
shaving blowing around at all. Nor do I ever find shaving on my equines
after hauling.
