[RC] Maltodextrin - Don Huston

I bought http://tinyurl.com/Glycogen-Loader Glycogen Loader several years ago and never used it to carbo-load my horse. Several months ago when it got cold and rainy here and my horse needed more calories, I decided to make use of the GL by adding a scoop (2oz) of it to my horse's 2lb grain ration instead of more grain.

This is a calm lazy horse that I have ridden for 8 years in over 30-50's so we know each other very well and I have enjoyed his easy-going attitude. I had considered the carbo-load thing to up his energy level for endurance rides but decided my 65yo bones did not need the aggravation.

Now, after 8 weeks of daily GL my horse is showing an increase in energy. Nothing drastic, no spooking just more alert and responsive. It might be possible to drop the grain to 1lb, feed the GL and go back to his standard energy level.

The GL is very expensive at $50+shipping for 8lbs. The ingredients on the GL label are 99.52% Malto Dextrin. I can buy Carbo Gain (maltodextrin) powder at $15+shipping for 7lbs here http://tinyurl.com/Carbo-Gain.
50lbs of grain has 50 servings and 7lbs of CG has 56 servings and both cost nearly the same so I could substitute 1 serving of CG for grain.

Anybody have any experience with this? I know there will be some dire negative possibilities and I want to here them but I would also like to hear any positive possibilities.

Don Huston
