Anyone who is interested in the funding of the FEI can download a .pdf file that states the sources of funding in terms of charges due to the FEI for their percentage of prize money and other charges at this url  http://www.fei.org/FEI/FEI_Administration/Pages/Finance_AND_Admin.aspx

It's kind of tedious corporate reading but it does explain a lot.
