RE: [RC] vet ? -mares controlling their heat cycle - heidiCan mares really control their heat cycle to come in and out of heat at will. Meaning you put a horse in a trailer and she comes out of heat. I hear about this type of thing but always discounted it because it seems biologically impossible. Just curious as I have two mares and have never seen this. MMM I can see myself in front of the mare- Giorgi stop ovulating now, now stop stop...... whoa there corpus leuteum.... whoa : ) At will? No. But external circumstances can cause them to repress heat-like behavior, and in some cases, stress can disrupt the cycle altogether. The stress of the show circuit is notorious for disrupting the reproductive process--and many show people got very frustrated when the best veterinary advice we could give them was, "Turn your mare out for a year, and then odds are she will start cycling again." That said, oftentimes, mares just become so used to their jobs that they don't bother to express signs of heat. We had one mare on the ranch where I was raised who was 14 years old, and we had NEVER observed her in heat. Then we got a stallion on the place, and one day we noticed her sort of looking with interest across the way to where he was living. We took her over, and it took her about half an hour to express overt signs of heat--but we bred her and got a very nice foal. Some mares are just "Victorian ladies." <g> Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
