Re: [RC] Presidents Cup for Junior & Young Rides. - LindakAll I can say is WOW!!! That runaway girl story sure brought back memories. When I was nineteen, back in the day, I rode (hung on to) a full-blown runaway while riding BAREBACK. The folks who loaned me this mare said to ride her in a hackamore which would be on the left side of the tackroom. I took the ONLY piece of equipment hanging there (I did not know what a hackamore was) and put it on her. Off I went. We did fine for several miles. Then when it was time to go home she began jigging and circling. I pulled her hard, her muzzle was touching her chest, but away she went. She was running down the center of a 2 lane blacktop road with white fencing going down each side. There was no way to circle her to a stop. There was a car about to enter the roadway and luckily it stopped as we blew by. So I just hung on to the mane with one hand and kept pulling the rope reins with the other hand. When we entered the property where she lived the driveway made a sharp left turn. She was going so fast I felt she could not negotiate the turn so was I prepared for her to jump the 5 ' white rail fence straight ahead. About 2 feet from the fence she somehow made the left turn, but I slipped to her side and when she came to a stop at the house I was hanging on UNDER her neck with my legs wrapped around her neck. The owners looked at me and ask "why the heck did you ride her in a halter?" I had never seen a halter with rope reins attach and a big knot under the neck, so mistook it for a hackamore. But,,,,, I have not been afraid of a runaway since. I know that isn't logical thinking, but when I survive something very scary, I'm usually not as afraid afterwards. From Linda-kHave a horse lovin' day!!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
