RE: [RC] where is selenium high/low? - heidiGiven those regional differences, that might be why I rarely have to use injectable selenium to start to get some response from oral dosing, and never had to more than twice in one horse (and the really interesting thing is that that one stubborn horse had originally come down from the Klamath area, virtually on the borders of Oregon). Even when we had deficiency issues, the horses probably never get to the same extremely low levels you'd be likely to see in the PNW, FL and some of the Great Lakes and other extremely deficient regions. Good point. It was not uncommon for us to find horses with whole blood levels of 12-20 ppb, and we just could not move that number upward until we gave an E-Se injection. If we then started supplementing at 7.5 mg per day, hot on the heels of the injection, we would make progress. No surprise that you had a stubborn one from the K Falls area--that is a marsh area to boot, so even more leached out than the rest of it, which was all pretty poor in selenium.
