RE: [RC] [RC] Blood test levels - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVMMight have been a post feeding peak, but it's difficult to get serum Se over 160 or so with selenite. Depends on the horse. In practice I saw quite a variance in responses to oral intake in terms of how much it took to get them into a "normal" range (and no, 160 is not "high" even for serum--given what you've said about the differences between serum and whole blood, that's just a good normal, given that normal for whole blood is 200-250). But I've never seen any go above normal (testing whole blood, where we would see it) even supplementing 7.5 mg per day on a long-term basis. Heidi That has been my experience in practice with endurance horses as well---lots of variation. Some required a kick-start with injectable Se, followed by oral (usually) selenite supplements to reach what the endurance community would consider 'normal', but it was generally do-able without too much trouble. It was easier on selenium yeast once that became available, but I never had any go significantly above the 200-250 range, even at very high dosing rates (see other post about horse that got 50 mg a day for 60 days before starting to approach optimum levels). Given that Icelandics are (if my sources that import them are accurate) traditionally and quickly pulled from the gene pool and into the food chain if they show signs of chronic lameness, I can't think of a breed MORE likely to have evolved mechanisms to use and store selenium more efficiently than other breeds where efficiency is not selected for, even inadvertently.
