RE: [RC] [RC] Pounds of Hay - heidiMy experience is different. I do feed supplements, so that certainly affects how much hay Caisson eats. Figuring in the supplements, he gets probably 17 lbs total per day (840 lb horse). As I said in a previous post, he has had in front of him all the time - he just doesn't eat it. At rides - he eats less than at home. He tends to not eat all his supplements - regardless of whether I have elytes in them or not, and seems to go light on the hay. I'm not sure how much of that is inborn and how much is due to horses being raised on inadequate forage, but what I glean from the folks who ought to know is that limiting forage to youngsters has a tendency to cause horses to grow up without adequately developing their hindguts, and hence having inadequate limits on what they will eat. That certainly fits what I've seen in practice, in endurance, and in having raised horses myself. Horses like yours are not uncommon, thanks both to modern breeding practices and modern husbandry practices, but IMO they are not entirely "normal" and they have a serious limiting factor that must be taken into account if one tries to manage them for a sport like ours.
