Re: [RC] Starting youngsters on the trail - Diane TrefethenHi Beth,If you are uncomfortable with ponying, don't forget you can just lead your young one on foot. When I had a two year old to work with, and no pony horse, I took him for "walks". We crossed flat streams, the streams that carve deep crevices in the ground, up and down hills, faced cattle, clambered over logs and through thickets. It was fun for both of us. I was able to establish myself as alpha mare (I always went first) and this alone proved invaluable later in his life because anywhere I wanted to go he'd give it a try. There is also something about walking your horse that creates a much greater closeness than ponying ever could. Of all the things I did with my baby, taking walks was the most rewarding. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
