Re: [RC] FW: from San Diego craigslist - 50 Free Thoroughbred Horses to good homes - Maggie MieskeGiving a horse away is not an easy endeavor. ?We placed horses after our illnesses and although some got fantastic homes, no matter how you try to place a horse in the best situation, things can go awry. ?We always placed horses with an agreement in which we had first rights of refusal. ?What happened then was people would enjoy the horse while it was convenient and when it wasn't anymore, we were scrambling to find new homes. ?Some came back in better condition than others. ?People want a super horse for nothing....we had young stock and one that had an injury when he was young, and although he had recovered and will be able to have a light rider and will probably be a great little trail horse, many people didn't want him because they wanted a kids' horse, or a horse already trained to ride
with miles and miles on it. ?It was heartbreaking. ?Before we left for Doha, we had two that had come back to us and we were paying board on them.. ?I knew we couldn't continue to do that and still keep Malik and a couple others that we wanted to keep. ?Fortunately, it worked out and they both found good homes. ?We get regular updates on both of them. ?We did not include first rights of refusal on any of the horses we gave away before we left. ?We had to be realistic. ?We spent months trying to place those last two....they came back to us in June and they didn't get "for real" homes until after we left because friends helped us keep looking. ?We were ready to euthanize them if we had to. ?What if we didn't have such good friends helping and boarding our horses? ?Not all of us are that lucky.... ? can say is that it must be a very serious situation. At least they are not just
turning them loose and are trying to place them rather than waste precios time
trying to sell (assuming they need to be moved quickly). I don't understand why
more owners who just can't keep the horses don't just try to give them
away?rather than?turning them loose to fend for themselves. I kow
there is the concern of someone taking a horse and not caring for it, but it is
possible to interview and be selective..
