About 10 years ago, my daughter and I went to Mountainside ride near Redding to do the 50 mile ride. We had worked very hard to condition, but my mare pulled a shoe before the end of the 25 and even with an easy boot, was pronounced off. My daugther was determined to finish the 50 (she was age 11) at the time...so I went around camp looking for a sponsor. Someone directed me to the Sousa's. Dennis and John were doing a slow, careful 50 on some young horses and agreed to take along an unknown junior rider and her horse, so off they went.. At the check back at camp, about 40 miles into the ride, my daughter looked exhausted and hot, but her mare was doing well and she wanted to finish. Due to the kindness of these two great guys...she finished the 50 with her mare in good shape. I was totally astounded she was willing to spend the rest of the day in the company of strangers, to try to finish. Dennis and John will always have my eternal gratitude for mentoring my daughter and allowing her to finish a 50 that Mom couldn';t!
