Re: [RC] The emotional side of losing your horse - Lynne Glazer - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLF

I honestly don't know what the laws are in my area about the burials, I
never had to look into as the buried ones were not mine. And I think
you are correct that if there ARE carcasses buried on property, it would
have to be disclosed upon sale of property. Good point.

And I didn't mean to insinuate that Kat was not "sappy" about her
horses, only that her posts sometimes come across very pointed and
unfeeling sometimes. My apologies. Email isn't the best for conveying
ones tone and emotions, as we know.

That's so lovely, Karen. I wish we had such an option in California. If
we did though, it would be regulated to a T and state fees collected.

Carrie, I don't know anyone (incluing Kat) who is not sappy about their
horses, but here you choose to follow the rules or you don't. I know of
famous stallions buried on their owners properties with gravestones,
from before it was illegal. I also know of horses in unmarked graves.
Once they're "gone", in my case, it's a beloved carcass, but the soul is
gone and I appreciate having the rendering truck come, so the body can
be put to some use, and no, in the case with my two horses, I did not
watch. And I was boarding each of those, even illegal burial wasn't
really an option. I know people who live on acreage (as I do now) can't
picture southern California horsekeeping, but the town mine were in
allowed at least 4 horses per half acre, IIRC.

What do people do when they sell their property with a bunch of horses
buried on it? In the case where there's a grave marker, do you make it a
contingency of the sale that the site is maintained?

We purposely purchased 240 acres (land is relatively cheap compared to

of the horses and other companion animals. We also offer a service for
horse owners, when the decision must be made to put down their equine
friend due to old age or chronic illness/injury.

Because Kansas law prohibits anyone but the owner from transporting a
dead animal, the horse must be capable of transport here. So, the
decision to use our service has to be made before an acute illness or
critical injury. We then lead the animal to a lovely meadow, surrounded
by evergreen trees, and a few hundred yards from a creek. Then we have
the vet come and perform the euthanasia and the horse is buried where it
lies. Memorial stones can be placed on the gravesite.
