Re: [RC] If they were the same price... 1st or 2nd crop hay? - Sharon Levasseur

Without a doubt, for this hay, that would be the 2nd crop. It is beautifully soft leafy grass. Still unbelievably green for December.

The 1st crop hay is much stemmier... round stems instead of flat blades... which I understand can be better for digestion, or the hind gut, or something like that. Some of it is really fine, and some thicker, but none of it remotely approaches the coarseness of the hay that my last supplier produced.

But yes, I will get it tested.

I would reach into each bale, grab a handful, squeeze it and feed
whichever was softer. Unless it was for my haflinger pony, in which
case I would look for the prickliest stemmiest, brownest stuff I could
find :)

Why?

I'm asking because I'm buying excellent t/b hay at $2.50 per bale, and I can get either crop, though 2nd crop bales are lighter. (1st crop bales ~40# and 2nd crop bales ~30#.) I've been feeding almost entirely 1st crop because everyone says 2nd crop is so much richer and more sugary... and that scares me a little. Which is funny, because back when I boarded I never knew or cared what he was given. Ignorance is bliss!

I plan to get both types tested, but meanwhile, what would YOU do?

Thanks,
