[RC] rain gear?? - Bagwell, TheresaWell, I used to keep a poncho (the emergency kind) and a raincoat (that I thought was waterproof...it wasn't); however, after my experience last month at the Southpoint Plantation (formerly Delightful Trails) ride I now have a whole new set of rain gear. Of course, now that I have all of this stuff that is definitely absolutley waterproof it will probably NEVER rain on ride day again in my lifetime ;)!! We showed up in sunny and warm (this is what people told us anyway) South Georgia on Friday and it was sunny and quite warm (this was just the hook to get you to set up camp and decide it was going to be a great weekend for a ride). We had looked at the forecast on Thursday and we knew it was going to get cold, but it didn't say anything about rain (apparently that part changed in between the time we looked and 3 a.m when we pulled out of the barn). To make a long story slightly shorter it started raining and rained and rained and rained. It did slack off just about the time we were supposed to go out (once again a trick) but midway through the first loop it started pouring (this is where I figured out my "waterproof" jacket wasn't). We couldn't feel our hands or feet from about 5 miles to go on the first loop and I had at least an inch of water in my boots (which really are waterproof but the water was coming in from the top). I could feel the water running down my legs (under my clothes) and into my boots...I felt like a human waterfall. We got the message at the first vet check that the rain was going to turn to snow and they were expecting 3" and it was going to drop to 12 degrees. I convinced our friend who came to crew to break camp down while we were out on the 2nd loop so we could leave when we got back. We ended up finishing 12th,14th and 16th (or 17th I can't remember now) and loaded the boys up for our 6 hour journey home. I have to say even though it sounds miserable it really wasn't (well the cold and wet part was). Randy was a life saver when he realized we didn't have a generator and sent us over to another place to park w/electric hook-ups. It was so nice to have heat all night long...we love you Randy!! The spoters, vets, timers,rm, property owners, and all the volunteers were absolutely wonderful (as usual)!! Thanks to everyone, but especially to Randy, Kay and Kim!!! We'll be there again next year for sure...but please try to order some sunshine for down there in "Sunny warm South Georgia" okay?? Okay so the rain gear I now have is: Mountain Horse waterproof (yes they really are) insulated pants, Harry Hall waterproof (once again I've already tested it) jacket (@ horseloverz for $20.00 and it is fabulous), Ovation waterproof snow gloves, Ariat insulated and yes of course, waterproof boots, and a waterproof helmet cover (that way I don't have to scrape the duct tape residue off after taping up the vent holes). I willl NEVER NEVER again be cold and wet at a ride and don't worry if you are camped near me I will probably have a LOT of extra WATERPROOF stuff to share!!!! ;) Theresa and Seyvilla DeBerry
