RE: [RC] New Endurance Horse Electrolyte Research - heiditell, I did not read the article, but my "take away" from the synopsis was "you *might* be able to over dose on eLytes, so watch out", that's all. Which most people have known for a long time. I hope this study didn't cost 100's of thousands of dollars. Well, no, we still have many ride vets telling riders that "you can't possibly give too many e-lytes, because they will just flush out the excess." This study would lead one to believe that that is not the case. FWIW, measurable hypernatremia and hyperchloremia in the face of increased drinking already IS "too much" and is more than "you *might* be able to overdose." The "take home" here is that the high doses ARE overdosing, and there are measurable parameters that are outside normal limits as a result. In such cases, the horse is ALREADY having to compensate, somehow, somewhere, even if you are not detecting a problem. (And once you see a problem, it may well be dramatic and too late.)
