[RC] Cleft Palate been there - CTH

My heart goes out to you. I had a foal born with a cleft palate years ago.(check the archives for postings) I wanted this baby more then anything. It almost killed me when I lost her. I wish I could give good news or hope but personally I would suggest putting the foal down. The surgery is very invasive with no guarantees. There has to be a quality of life.
As my best friend (who is a vet) said to me just the other day. Do not be a deathaphobic.
Animals do not understand long term hope they under stand short term hope (Like I hope there is a cookie in that pocket.)
They do understand suffering.

I have not had any experience with this, but found this:

The prognosis for a foal with a cleft palate varies, depending on the
severity of the problem. If the cleft does not involve a significant
amount of the hard palate, then chances for a successful recovery
increase. However, the prognosis for normal upper respiratory tract
function, including soft palate function, is quite guarded. There have
been too few repaired and followed over time to have a firm idea of the
consequences of surgery on the animal's athletic potential. Many horses
will never achieve normal 'athletic' function, yet are serviceable for
lesser activities, including breeding. Foals which are treated before
six weeks of age show the most improvement since after that time,
aspiration pneumonia complicates the outcome.
