Re: [RC] My first horse - Barbara McCraryAfter my first "oil drum" horse, the first REAL one I rode was our neighbor's plow horse, named Queenie. She was a handsome chestnut, and I would walk up the hill to our neighbor's and borrow her to ride around our 2-acre pasture. I used to gallop her a lot, back and forth. I rode a thick pad tied on with a rope, and a snaffle bit attached to her halter. I'm not sure how many times it happened, probably only once, but I rode her too much at a gallop and she ended up back at the neighbor's with a tie-up the next morning. Our neighbors were so long-suffering with me. They had to have realized how desperate I was to have a horse, because they put up with me a lot. They gave me the job of rounding up their dairy herd ever afternoon (this was after I finally got my own horse) and bringing them in for milking. One time, a cow refused to cooperate and I ran her around to get her back in the herd. The neighbor graciously explained to me that she was close-up to calving and that running her around wasn't a good idea. This was back in the 1940s when such subjects were not openly discussed, especially between a grown man and a 12-year-old girl. I wasn't completely clueless about various animals' reproduction, but I wasn't as comfortable with the subject as....say...my granddaughters at the same age. And my education was mostly in the realm of dogs, cats and chickens. All in all, I survived and so did the neighbors....bless them. He didn't ride them, but he'd let the neighbors and they weren't usually very safe and boy the attitudes, I remember falling off of all of them except for one gentle old Clyde mix, she was a sweetie. I remember riding double on one with my mom and us being dumped and waving bye to the horse as he ran back home. I got my first pony Prince for $50 with saddle (only used when I had to) and bridle when I was 6yrs old, he was a gorgeous chestnut (still my favorite color, no idea on breed), looked like a small horse instead of a hairy/pudgy pony and he was a good boy who taught me how to ride/fall off/get bucked off and did all the pony things, but I don't remember the bad much, just how much fun we had. There were two other girls my age in the neighborhood who had ponies and we rode all over together and played rodeo/etc. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
