Re: [RC] Looking for a kid safe endurance prospect - Diane Trefethen - Keith W Kibler

I agree that the person is totally unrealistic with her desire of an almost free almost perfect kid safe horse. "To Dream the Impossible Dream" comes to mind.
But, that person is easy to ignore. The irritant to me is when that person shows up at my place and wastes my time.
That is when I feel a funny growl in my tummy.

Diane - I would have to agree with you on this one. The requested type
of horse would normally sell for much more than this, otherwise, would
likely be too old for endurance. I have learned over the years, with
all my "horse trading" that you get what you pay for and I've actually
opted to spend more than I originally planned in order to get what I was
truly looking for, especially if I were to put my kids on his back. The
more specific your criteria, the more the cost goes up. The only case
in which this wouldn't be true might be one of those rare finds (which
is possible with the horse market being so saturated right now), and
finding one thru a last-minute rescue situation. But that would be a
crapshoot.

... We are helping my daughter's 13 yr old friend find a horse that she
could ride LD's and 50s on and show for 4-H... We are looking for
something... that is trained, sane, sound, healthy, safe and likes to
be loved on. they are looking for under $1000.

Just getting to reading some older posts and I want to respond to this
one.

I have never seen a request for a sane, well trained, safe for a kid
horse where the writer is willing to spend more than about $1,000. Why
is that? Clearly they know such horses aren't easy to find (why else are
THEY advertising for one?). And yet they seem to think that the owners
of such caring animals ought to be literally giving them away. I doubt
they would expect people to sell a top show horse for $1000, or a
consistent Top Ten horse for $1000. So why should they so undervalue
that extremely rare quality in a horse, the quality of being a true Care
Taker? We all know horses that when you put a beginner on them, they go
where they please, stop to eat grass and refuse to move on, turn and
head (run?) back to the barn. How many do you know that react to
beginners (adult OR child) by thinking, "This is someone that I need to
take care of"? I don't mean horses so old they CAN'T be obnoxious, but
rather good, fit horses that CHOOSE to be careful with their "precious
cargoes".

And here this ad ALSO wants this horse to be a kid safe endurance
prospect! A Care Taker AND and an Endurance horse? In one package? For
only $1000? What can people who make these requests be thinking?
