[RC] Winter Conditioning- Advice From San Diego- Ha ! - Vchorsegal

Although I live in San Diego I did live in Texas for 5 years.  We got snow on occasion, and if I really wanted to ride i wore a lot of layers ! If you do a gentler pace and your horse doesn't sweat too much then it is less likely she will get chilled. Warm up & cool down really well.  Don't forget that a lot of slow riding in the hills can go a long way, IMHO ! Depending on where you live, you might need to haul to a different area to do a longer training ride.  Also- take advantage of the mild "windows" in weather that you get !
As for footing- I rode with shoes, so to avoid the ice on the roads I rode on the shoulder where I knew what it looked like underneath but it wasn't as slick.  Where exactly do you live ?  - Heidi Helly
p.s. Even folks in mild climates haul to rides where they actually have weather, especially 100s & multi- days !
