Re: [RC] Bit to S-Hack - WAS bitless bridle - Carrie - Elizabeth Walker

I think the only way you will know is to try. I tried Caisson in an S- hack after Tejon 2007 -- the bit I was using pinched the sides of his tongue against his teeth, and I needed something different. The S- hack worked (mostly) in training rides, but in an actual ride is different. He bolted with it 4 times during the Bar-H ride, and I decided that it just wasn't going to work for him. :) In a low- stress situation, it works fine - but then anything works fine with him in a low stress situation. Once his race-brain kicks in, its a whole different ballgame.

On that note, has anyone taken their horse who's always been in a bit,
to an S-hack and had success with this? My mare is so sensitive to
change, that I hesitate, but would love the simplicity of the bitless or
S-hack with her. Just not sure how she might react to the change and
will I be sacrificing control? Lol YIKES!

I use a Dr. Cook bitless bridle and love it. ?More important, my horse
loves it. ?But it's not for every horse. ?Originally, I purchased the
bridle for my husband's mare. ?She blew right through it! ?Put the S
hackamore on her, and she was just fine. ?My Arab gelding goes very well
in the bitless and will put his head down and shove his nose into it. ?I
have very good control; he respects the bridle and has NEVER blown, or
attempted to blow through it. ?The one down side is I have the biothane
one. ?To me, it just doesn't release as quickly as I'd like and I
suspect it doesn't release totally. ?My horse will open his mouth as in
a stretch, but I suspect it's to loosen the cross pieces. ?The other
thing I don't like is you have to keep an eye on the cheek pieces that
cross under the jaw. ?They twist easily. ?If I had to do over, I would
have purchased the nylon.

Subject: [RC] bitless bridle

I just recently purchased a Dr. Cooks bitless bridle. Is anyone currently using one or have used one? What are your thoughts on the bridle? I currently use a S-Hackamore but I do not like how the chain rusts and you cant adjust it after it rusts. Meghan Dunn Central Region
