Re: [RC] The Stall Rested Endurance Horse - Diane TrefethenThe first thing that struck me about your original post is that it looks like as of now your mare has been in "stall rest" for about 4 months. That is a pretty long time for a horse that is healing well, not so long if the horse keeps repeatedly injuring itself. How many months did the vet say she had to stay "quiet"? If more than 4 months, could he be being overly cautious? Which brings me to the second thing I noted.Your mare leaps, pirouettes, crashes around causing nearby people to flee. Yet you do not mention that she has reinjured herself. So why is she still in "stall rest" if she has healed adequately to romp and stomp without injuring herself? I would try to get her a stall with an attached paddock and leave the door to outside open 24/7 unless she has no winter coat in which case just open all day. You said her stall was her "safety bubble" so with the door open, she can relearn about being outside completely at her own pace. For what it's worth, when I had a horse with a bowed tendon he was kept "quiet" for about 2 months and then turned out with just one other horse that he knew well. That plus regular hand walking (think hikes) for another 9 months. The bow came from a soft tissue tear that had I found (ultrasounded) it before the bow would have meant the above regiment but a total of 6 months instead of almost a year. Good luck with your special mare. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
