thank you Ed!! I have a Professionals Choice girth and never had a problem until our 100 mile ride last month. His elbows were both galled and I think it's from hitting the nylon top of the girth. It had never done this before, but maybe the nylon got "harder" or aged somehow? I'm changing out the billets to long ones, as the buckles under my leg made his sides sore a little too (never had really done that before either, but it's a fairly flat ride and I think 15+ hours of trotting made him sore) and will be getting an all neoprene covered dressage girth with the contouring in the elbow as well as elastic on both ends. (Anyone have a source?)

Some of you may remember that I had trouble with an older Wintech girth. The
vinyl (PVC) had lost plasticizer and cracked. Well I just solved a similar
problem.
A couple of years ago I purchased a "Soft Touch" (TM) girth. It
looks great. The Neoprene wraps most of the way around, there is a welted seam
and the back (away from the horse) is nylon cloth.
Anyway, this summer I started to see some girth galls on a mare. Did the
Desitin trick and rode on. About a month ago I noticed one in a strang place.
A detailed look revealed that the welt was vinyl, and had cracked. This area,
even though far away from the horse, does contact the elbow when the trot is
very extended. I purchased a more conventional neoprene girth where the
neoprene goes all the way around and the problem went away.
Bottom line: I now stay away from Wintech, Professional's Choice, and Soft
Touch girths.
