Re: [RC] re: gun to euthanize - Michael LewisI believe I'd prefer the pistol to the knife if faced with the difficult decision to euthanize. I know the knife probably closely approximates how a horse would be killed in the wild based on what I've seen on National Geographic (ha ha), and that the shock reaction would be rather quick. Just believe the pistol would be quicker and even less traumatic for a horse who is a dear friend.I have heard that euthanizing a horse with drugs is not always "quick and painless", and that the horse can occasionally thrash about wildly while in the process of dying. That is something I would like to avoid. My question would be in regard to the law. What does "equine law" say about euthanizing a horse on one's own without first consulting a vet? The horse dropped instantly with little movement. I held the gun in the spot shown in Heidi's article. My husband used a .44 revolver. Both times, it was an incredibly difficult decision under pressure and very emotionally wrenching, but THE RIGHT THING to do.
