Knowing exactly where to place the bullet is paramount so as not to accidently prolong an animals suffering. I have never had to do that but have had several friends that have a small hand gun that they use when necessary. However, they have stipulated how important it is to know exactly where to place the bullet. Aside from a gun I would talk with my vet as to what he/she can leave you that will exact the same result. There again - felling a 1000 pound horse is not easy and you have to know what direction the horse is going to fall. There again instruction at a vet school might help.
