Re: [RC] How do I find a good horse personality/breed fit - Rae Callaway

I don't think very young really matters.? My girl, Scarlet, I got when she was
2+, but we didn't really bond until we started riding.? I'm hearing
impaired?and over time, somehow this mare picked up on it and I really feel she
takes care of me out on the trail.? She is more alert than any horse I've
ridden, even in a group and will point out things way in the distance that the
others in the group haven't noticed.? If I give her a pat and tell her the
thing is an ok, thing, she'll relax right off.? It's very handy since we
sometimes ride on dirt bike trails and I can't tell the difference between a
dirt bike 10 feet behind me and a jet a mile or so above me!? Scarlet is 17 now
and when we're out there, it feels like we're sharing a brain.?

Wow!? Thanks for all your suggestions privately and on the group.? My next
question which occurred to me because of? what many of you have said is,
Does it "matter" if I buy a young weaningly and raise him or buy a 3-4 year
old that is started and going well, in how likely we will be to bond.? On
one hand, you can bond as the baby grows, and yet for me, I can really "see"
a personality when they are under saddle.? I guess my preference would be to
actually be able to ride the horse and see how he acts, responds to stimuli,
me, etc. etc.

thanks, faith
