What I am reading in several posts today is we have many folks doing first 50's...that puts a huge smile on my face..! You will never forget your first 50. I never did. The horse, the day, the owner, even the guy who blasted by me and told me he was out to catch the top ten horses..:)
Sierra Fix Satan..a Serafix grandson. I was the conditioning rider on that horse the year he finished 7th on Tevis, the year they did not award the Haggin Cup. I rode that horse during the week, his owner drove to Cool and rode him on the weekends..Those were the days..The dentist I worked for is now a client of mine. He still remembers me watching the clock so I could race home to ride till long after dark. The year was 1989. Seems so very long ago..another lifetime ago.
Of all the vivid memories, I suppose I remember the start the most. This was one hot little horse, with race brain to spare. Larry said I had to wait till all the other horses had gone to bring him to the start. I was really ticked. I had been riding this horse all season, dammit! Then I got on him...and in an instant I understood. Larry told me to keep him in a trot, and just let him go. We had a great ride. That little Arab could sure move!
