RE: [SPAM] [RC] How much hay do you feed and what kind? - heidiWith all this talk about where people buy hay and prices, I wonder how much hay people in other areas feed, especially where hay is expensive? I guess I'm spoiled being in the Midwest, but I have my choice of local farmers and have never paid more than $3.75 for a small square bale, and that was delivered and stacked! It's been as little as $1.50 per bale some years. If I had to pay $6 or even $11 a bale, I might have to rethink my feeding strategy or stop having horses altogether for economic reasons! First of all, price per bale doesn't mean much unless you say how big the bales are. For instance, a 60# bale that costs $3.50 is the same price as a 120# bale that costs $7. That said, there virtually is no substitute for feeding sufficient forage. Hay is moderately-priced where I live, but I have a lot of horses--so the only choices are to spend a large portion of my income on hay, or to cut back on horses. I'm not aiming this at you, but with regard to what you said in the last sentence of what I snipped above, if you can't afford to feed them what they need, then it is better not to have them. And that means providing adequate hay or pasture, because there really isn't any alternative to that that is truly healthy for the horse.
