Re: [RC] High/Low IS NOT Club foot!! - Linda Marins

----- Original Message -----

Here’s an article from Kerry Ridgeway on Hi/Low that was updated in Feb 06 if anyone is interested:

http://www.thefarrierbox.co.uk/articles/Introduction%20Kerry%20Rigeway%20up-date.pdf

To quote Dr. Ridgeway's own article (my bold):

Let us first discuss the overall postural

deviations that are a direct consequence

of the lower of the two heels. It should

be clarified, at this point, that that it is

not the intent to address a true

“clubfoot.” This paper is also not

addressing an anatomically “short leg”

syndrome, (though to a cursory

evaluation, the limb with the lower heel

may give the appearance of a shorter

leg). The low heeled limb is functionally

shorter – not anatomically shorter.

One of the most frustrating aspects of dealing with a club foot
is getting straight all the terms that get tossed around and misused
(club foot vs. contracted tendons vs. congenital club foot vs.
flexural deformity vs. high/low).  High/low is NOT club foot.
Although the high foot in a high/low horse might also be
club, they are two separate phenomena. Dr. Ridgeway knows
the difference.  So should anyone wanting to learn about this topic.

However, it is interesting to consider how what he has to
say about a high/low horse *might* also apply to a club
footed horse.
