My experience with hives turned out to be pine shavings both in the stall and the trailer. Both humans and animals can be allergic to pine. I can't use Pine sol for cleaning as it turns my hands in to large red lumps.

We have a horse that has had a problem with hives. They first appeared soon after we got a load of hay that was about 10% alfalfa. To make a long story short we had him tested for allergies and found he is allergic in varying degrees to all hay except Timothy. We did both the blood test and skin tests and the results were pretty much the same. We did the allergy shots for awhile but stopped after a couple of years. As he's gotten older, he's now 8, he rarely has hives. However we feed Timothy exclusively. Weather changes also seem to bring on his hives! When that happens they're usually gone in 24 hours. We have used Dex back when his hives were really bad-all over the body and very itchy. I don't think using Dex often is a good idea. If it's making your horse very sleepy or tired then I'd try a lower dose but I'd use the Dex rarely and very sparingly. You need to find out
what is the causing the hives. It can be a long process and isn't cheap but then with horses what is. Mary S. Arlington, Wa.

I suddenly keep having a problem with my gelding AJ and what appear to be hives. For the last several weeks he keeps breaking out all over with what appears to be hives I do not think it is mosquito bites. Since he is covered head to toe.
The vet put him on the steroid Dex and benadryl which I gave a series of treatments to him and got him all cleared up then about two days later they are back.. of course they come back on the weekend when we need to go out and do a ride to try and stay in some shape..
We live in Florida so it is hot and humid at this time of year but he has never had a problem before he is 8 years old and we have not changed anything in his environment or food..
He is now on a daily 1.5 cc of dex to hopefully just keep it in his system enough to keep the hives away.
How hard is the dex on his system I am concerned about him being on a steroid so often.. and the benadryl makes him want to just kill over.. he is very tired with the medicine..
