Do the braids actually help the horse cool or are they strictly for looks?

I ride limited distance on a TWH that does not pulse down as fast as an 
Arab.  I've learned all sorts of tricks for getting his pulse down and for 
this particular horse, one of those tricks is braiding his mane.  It isn't 
even particularly thick and he's a fine coated horse, but he does seem to 
cool faster with that hair off his neck.
