RE: Re: [RC] Shavings - Debbie ParsonsI used shavings on my big trip and I've also used the wood pellets on prior shorter trips without a problem. Something I did this time that I've not done before is to put a fly mask on my horse (I bought a pretty purple "bug eye" fly mask; I'm sure Boomer was embarassed!). That protected his eyes. I just crossed my fingers for his respiratory system. Between the shavings and dropping the front and last left side window (plus one or 2 of the 3 right side drop downs), I wanted that eye protection. I did not want the trailer floor to become slippery and Boomer did pee in the trailer. I just tossed the wet shavings when I stopped in a place that it was OK to dump them (most of the overnight stops had dumping spots). I did not use a lot of shavings but rather put a thin layer down with more in the pee zone. It worked well and my horse survived what was likely more than 7200 miles in a trailer over the past 3 weeks. Of course, as it is often with horses, what works for one may be a disaster for another or I just might have gotten lucky! So, I use pellets, put about a 1/2 bag into the areas that are pee'd on the most, lightly moisten so they aren't roller skates and I don't have trouble with them flying around. I used to use shavings but they didn't soak up enough for the amt. of pee produced! At least I don't see pellet dust on anything! I don't have a stock type trailer though! . o o o o o_ \ \____ o_ \_\ (*)~(*)\_______/ / \ \______/ / \_______/\ /- o-- /_/ \ / / \ / / o o o-- / / \ o o heidi larson --- On Tue, 7/29/08, Cunningham, Marci <mcunningham@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: From: Cunningham, Marci <mcunningham@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] Shavings To: "'ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx'" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 11:09 PM After 30 years of pulling horse trailers I put shavings in my trailer for the first time last October for my trip to the Grand Canyon XP 5 day ride. I took 2 horses and have had problems with the floor getting slippery from the poop and pee on similar long trips which was from Bakersfield to Kanab. A couple of years ago I had a WERM floor installed so I don't have to worry about pulling out mats for cleaning. I used two bales of shavings but one probably would have been sufficient. I am happy to say I was pleased with the results. It was easy to remove the soiled shavings after the trip and I still have plenty of shavings left in my trailer. My trailer is a SilverLite 3 horse stock trailer with one air gap on each side, roof vents and a window in the back door. I don't have any problem with shavings flying about during a trip and I think the inside stays cooler with the shavings and the horses seem to be more comfortable standing in the trailer and have no problems pooping or peeing. I can see if you have an open stock trailer that the shavings would fly around but not so with my trailer. I am a shavings convert now.
