Is this a gelding thing or will my opinionated mare be trainable for this 
as well?

The first horse I ever knew that peed on command was a mare, so I assume 
mares learn too.  Because of drug testing many track horses pee on command.

I just gave him a verbal cue and a favorite treat each time I caught him 
going.  He learned really quickly.
