it is simple (at the personal level:) - remember this started, not  
with AERC, but with a comment (by me:) about the difficult position  
FEI has put riders in; that they loose more than just 1 completion if  
they have a Metabolic elimination; the potentially loose their  
ability to compete in championship events. Thus the increase in  
"RO" (or trainer option) withdraws in FEI events. It's not one day,  
one non-completion - it's not being able to represent your country at  
a world championship.

That's a lot of pressure to do the WRONG thing vis-a-vis the horse.  
(it lead to a discussion of the ambiguities in the articulation of  
the AERC guidelines:) - I too, as a rider, don't have any problem,  
nor really care about the codes used in the AERC record keeping  
process. But as a RM, I'd like to know I'm doing the same thing that  
all other RMs are doing AND as an FEI RM with competitors attempting  
to gain qualification for the 2008 WEC, I'd REALLY REALLY like to  
know I'm doing the right thing (and not allowing, for example, a  
situation where an FEI code is Withdrawn, and the AERC report for the  
same rider is M -- same horse same day -- two divisions -- it could  
get sticky with so much riding on that M.
