There apparently was a difference of opinion about this in the 19th century. Troting buggy horses were encouraged and trained to do the "passing trot". Don't ever forget that when you have a gelding who does this a few of things apply. 1) If conformation genes are the reason, he will not pass them on. 2) By the time you find this out he is 7 years old, and you love hime so you don't want to sell him. 3) From personal experience some horses can do this type of trot for many miles, many years with no obvious ill effects. 4) Not every horse can, should or does look like a classic dressage horse.
