RE: [RC] Trot vs Canter - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLFI have to chime in and agree with you guys about the canter and knowing our own horses. When I did my first couple of LD's, I rarely let my mare canter and kept her at a trot most of the time because that's what I was told was the "norm" for endurance riding. When my mare hits a certain speed in her trot, she breaks into this funny little gaited thing somewhat resembling a Tolt. It's sort of between a trot and a canter. It's actually quite smooth and fun to ride and actually makes me laugh, but I also know that she's wanting to canter because the trotting is either getting old, uncomfortable or the speed of the extended trot doesn't suit her. I have started letting her do her 'rocking horse' canter more often and she does great with that. However, I have to admit, I have gotten "looks" from people when I've done that, as if I'm killing my horse. She means the WORLD to me and I would never force her into anything that would put her in harms way. So, we usually rotate between walk, trot and canter depending on terrain. I've never seen an endurance horse doing one. What I see our horses doing is the working trot. http://youtube.com/watch?v=HvLR54xtBjg&feature=related Angie Fura www.tracetribute.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
