[RC] Ponying - Benedikte Webb-Whitman

I have done some ponying to condition two horses. I usually ride the dominant
horse and pony the other as that seems to work best for me. My mare is pretty
attached to my gelding and if something happened and I had to drop the rope, I
think she would do her best to stay with him.

Two things I found really useful - one has already been mentioned. Eventually
the rope is going to get under the ridden horses tail and suddenly tighten up.
If you have a horse that does not use a crupper, you had better do some arena
work with them getting them used to that sensation before you go out with
another horse.

The second is that I purchased a "Be Nice" halter and have found that
invaluable. It is just enough that when the ponied horse decides "No way am I
going in there with you" or around here, "That sand sure looks nice and my back
is really itchy", you have some support on your side to convince the beast.
However, as before, I would spend some arena time getting the ponied horse used
that that halter before taking them out.

Good luck,
Benedikte
