Re: [RC] old horses - mspattykirkI have a 19 year old Morgan who is crippled in his left front foot. He has no cartlidge in his pastern joint and bone spurs. He LOVES to be ridden inspite of his pain. When my grandchildren come he will pace the fence until I bring him into the barn. I only saddle him up for the little kids and let them ride him around the yard. He collects himself up, gets on the bit with foam flying from his mouth and struts around with his rider like he's in the show arena again. When his head starts bobbing, I know he's had enough. He gets his bute and goes back out in the pasture to rest. Also, if we take the other horses out to ride our trails in the back woods, we let him come with us without a rider. He loves being with us on trail. It's not much, but it makes him feel like he still has a job and he's still useful. He was, and still is a really magnificent horse, and he will have a forever home with us for the rest of his life. He started to have trouble with arthritis in his left hock last year. This year he is really off, however he lets me know he wants to be used. Maybe only to the mail box or to the lower field for fresh grass. His heart is willing, but his body isn't able. It is good for their minds to be used. When I was feeling proud of myself and my young paint for coming back from our first trail ride, the standardbred came up to the fence and looked at me as if to say "Why didn't you take me". I love the older horses. They are worth their weight in gold. Let the horse tell you what they can do or can't do.
