I guess the real question is "what is old". Not the physiological
definition.....but the "whole entity" definition.......
My horse always wanted to be going and doing, though we never did any
distance riding because I was unaware of the sport when she and I were riding
the pastures and exploring trails. When I did finally discover it, I was
starting a new horse so he and I started down the competitive trail.
BUT, I can assure you of this, if you ever have the chance to ride neck and
neck with 37 year-old Elmer Bandit, of NATRC fame, with over 20,000 COMPETITIVE
miles, there will be no question in your mind as to "why" this very aged horse
still competes; he LOVES IT!!! He just gets so tickled when he can do
trotting competitions and beat those which are decades younger. He is an
anomaly, no doubt, but I am certain that there are many more like him out there,
just not sharing the limelight!!
