My husband's grandfather used to drive into town, about 20 miles away, and 
go to friends to stay overnight.  He would go downtown the next day, pay his 
bills and do his shopping, and then drive home again.  His team was a work 
team and I think he drove some sort of wagon, as he was not in the financial 
position to afford a light, fast driving horse and a buggy.  He usually took 
at least one neighbor with him.
