Re: [RC] Permission not to pass (was: Fireworks ride...) - k s swigartFrom: <SandyDSA@xxxxxxx> If I don't want me behind me, I can pull off the trail and let them go by.this is not the case I am speaking of, Kat - if they do not want to pass and insist on riding on my tail, If you get off the trail to let them go by, they can hardly NOT pass. In your earlier post you said: it is also important in a case like this that if one desires to join another rider or even more, draft off of them, ASK PERMISSION! Do NOT just assume it is okay to just pull in behind someone and let them pull you in. Emphasis yours. It is NOT necessary to "ASK PERMISSION" to ride behind somebody. If you come up behind me and don't want to pass me, it is perfectly okay to just do so. If, for whatever reason, I don't want you there, it is MY responsiblity to let you know and get out of your way to let you go by. Refusing to pass when somebody gets out of your way and asks you to would, indeed, be rude (and rather difficult, I might add); however, refusing to pass when asked to is not the same as assuming that it is okay not to pass without first asking. So, for all you first time riders who are trying to figure out the unstated ettiquette of endurance rides and sharing the trail... It is perfectly okay with me if, when you catch up with me on the trail, for you to continue to ride behind me without first asking for permission to do so. _I_ will probably ask you if you would like to go by, and then we can have a conversation about it, but if I don't (or it is somebody else), I consider it perfectly acceptable for you to assume that if I wanted you to go by, because I or my horse has a problem with horses behind it, that I would let you know. People riding horses that have problems with other horses behind them are the ones with the responsibility to let others on the trail know that their horse has this problem. I do NOT consider it the responsiblity of everybody in the ride who might come up behind me to ascertain whether the my horse who they are sharing the trail with has a problem with sharing the trail. However, it would appear that not all riders are in agreement on this, so probably the safest thing that any two riders can do when they meet on the trail IS to have a conversation about it, then each can state their preferences and come to some sort of agreement. kat Orange County, Calif. :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
