How about another option? Have you tried making two low braids intead?Frenchbraid perhaps only low on either side? I used to have long hair when young and did braids more than ponytails because it used to break the hair more.
My daughter did a somersault off a big warmblood who bucked huge on a normal arena ride(he had just come out of quaranteen).and got microscopic injury at the back of the neck/head right below where her helmet came, since then she only uses one with a gps system.But she does it for a living.
