[RC] Mg source (only for intellectually curious trivia buffs.) - Sisu West Ranch

I quickly found this:

http://www.minsocam.org/MSA/collectors_corner/article/oremin.htm

Magnesium - Although magnesium is found in many minerals, only dolomite, magnesite, brucite, carnallite, and olivine are of commercial importance. Magnesium and other magnesium compounds are also produced from seawater, well and lake brines and bitterns.

The Mg compounds in "brines" would be Chlorides or Sulfates. Thus the historical production of "Epsom salt" from the waters near Epsom. I would not be surprised to find that much Epsom salt was still produced directly from brine, but would guess that the metal was produced from other sources since it needs to be electro refined from fused salts, not water solutions.

Now we all know more than we need to know about the source of Mg.
