Re: [RC] Prohibited substance? - k s swigartFrom: "Karen Standefer" <kstandefer@xxxxxxxx> It's a saline laxative (Epsom Salt) which is a chemical compound, not a naturally occurring mineral. Actually, it is a very naturally occurring mineral. The reason it is called EPSOM Salt is that it is found commonly in the waters in Epsom, England, originally "discovered" back in the early 1600s. However, all the stuff you find on the shelf in shops was mined from somewhere. I suppose it might be possible to synthesize it in a laboratory environment, but I don't know of anywhere that this is done. Like pretty much all salts, it is mined. Are you thinking of Magnesium Oxide? No, although I know that Magnesium Oxide is also used often as a feed additive to supplement dietary magnesium, it is not the only magnesium compound that is used for this. When _I_ have wanted to add magnesium to my horse's diet, the cheap and easy way to do it has always been to throw in a handful of Epsom Salt into the feed. I confess, I have also done this at endurance rides (don't ask me which one) as I had always considered it an easy way of increasing magnesium intake during a ride. kat Orange County, Calif =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
