[RC] [RC] Selenium Vit.E Help - Lucy Chaplin TrumbullDon Huston:Hay tested at 0.35ppm Se so 15lbs has 2.4mg Se per day. Don, did you test Datezz when you started this, or were you just assuming he could use more Se because of the level your hay tested at? Feb 29 blood test showed serum Se at 0.14ppm did not test Vit.E. Wait. I'm confused. His serum was at 0.14 ppm and you reduced his Se, yet his level increased to 0.29 ppm? Is this because he was only on the higher dose for a couple of weeks, d'you think? My understanding is that a low Se level can make it hard for the horse to take up Se, so if your horse is low, you have to give a big dose to get his level up, so he can use any supplement you give him. Yet it didn't seem like Datezz's level was very high when you reduced his dose. Curious. Datezz's attitude and energy have improved a lot in the 90 days. My questions are what would be a good level of Se and Vit.E to maintain and howmuch of the supplements do I need to continue to feed to keep those levels? If you get any private replies, please pass them my way, although I suspect this might be a "it depends" answer - I've heard of two endurance horses in the same situation, eating the same hay, yet one tested low and the other normal. Hmm. Back in March, my endurance horse tested at 0.2 ppm (serum), so I started him on E-Se-Mag supplement. I haven't tested our hay, but it comes from an area known to be low in Se. He had two pulls for lameness this year, at least one of which seems to have been a cramping issue, so I was hoping to help him out by raising his Se level which seemed to be at the bottom end of the spectrum for endurance horses (although my vet was happy with the result and said it was in the middle of "normal"). He completed his first 100 about ten days after I started him on the E-Se-Mag, although was stiff at the end. I have no idea how long it takes to increase the Se levels on a horse that wasn't particularly low to start with. He's currently being *supplemented* (not counting anything he's getting out of the three-grain hay I'm currently feeding) with: Se - 5mg Magnesium - at least 6,000 mg Vit E - 2,500 mg (which seems puny compared to what you're supplementing ;-)) (btw, I have not noticed any loose stools related to the Mag, but he doesn't have access to fresh green grass (we don't got that here in CA... just brown sh*t).) I too am curious as to how much/how long I need to supplement him for. I'm currently giving over double the "maintenance" dose and figured I'd wait until I was close to finishing the tub before re-testing him and then decide how to proceed. (note, I suspect some of his cramping issues might also be from minimal e-lyting. I managed to increase it for the 100, but could definitely still do better).
