[RC] Hay Prices -- Midwest - Donna J. Coss700 lb. grass mixed with some Alfalfa....................$50--to--$65.00 straight bale.Very difficult to find small 40-50 lb. bales, but price is about $3.50 to $5.00 bale depending on quality Hay farmers find the big bales so much more cost effective to bale and work with. Round bales...............$40--$50 Most barns are staying away from round bales, as it is difficult to find any quality hay that is not moldy in the center. Too much waste on the marginal hay and if the hay is very good, the horses will consume a bale within just a short time. Cannot feed stall horses, from round bale, because of the way it is wound. We have gone to the 700 to 900 straight bales that we store in the Arena, along the side walls and move with tines mounted on the front of our loader tractor. We move them one at a time under the shed row eaves and feed from there. They are a hassle and one needs to be strong to load even one leaf into a wheel barrel. Guess the small bales ruined all of us for their convenience. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
