I'm a total newbie so I don't know much, but here's my favorite piece of advice anyway: That riding slowly is not the end-all, be-all of protecting your horse. Going too slowly keeps your horse bearing your weight longer, hitting the ground longer, out in the heat/cold longer, and going without food and rest longer. The farrier at Longstreet (Guy Buck) was talking about this very thing Saturday. He summed it up something like this, "The quicker you finish, the shorter the suffering."
