RE: [RC] Don't touch my mouth!!!! Testing capillary refill. - Ranelle RubinMel,Have you tried doing any "mouthwork" with molasses and or applesauce on your hands. It is a messy way to do it, but alot of horses respond quite well. I would mix about a tablespoon of molasses with a cup of applesauce. Then put a little in your hand and let her lick it and "decide" she likes it, rather than it being forced on her. Slowly work into it being your choice to put it on her nose, around the edges of her mouth, eventually working your fingers under her lips to massage her gums. Right above the upper front teeth is an accupressure point that many horses respond well to light massage. I would do this over 5 or 6 sessions, each session ending in some reward, stopping and backing up anytime she gets agitated. The key is to let it be her idea. Testing capillary refill.Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 15:04:10 -0500 I have an older mare that I was thinking of conditioning up so that my friend can do some LDs with me. She has fabulous ground manners and is very sweet until you try to touch her mouth. Her previous owners really did a number on her mouth and she will NOT let you even get close to touching her mouth unless she is sedated. Trust me, I have tried to work her through her fears with a variety of methods with little success. So, instead of pushing the issue, I ride her in a hackamore and squirt her wormer on her feed. Is there any other way that the vets can check capiallary refill besides pressing on her gums. Even if they could get their fingers in her mouth, they would be hard pressed to keep them their long enough to tell what is going on. This is the only obstacle I have to entering this mare in an LD.
