[RC] Rabies vaccine - k s swigartKaren Everhart said: The manufacturer said NO, that horses metabolize the vaccine too quickly and that all equines needed an annual rabies vaccine for protection. Well.....the vaccine manufacturer (i.e. the people selling the vaccine) WOULD say that wouldn't they? Manufacturers are not always the most reliable source of information with respect to how often it is in your best interests to buy their product. Here is what I got told by a vet just last month. "There has never been a reported case of rabies in any horse, anywhere, that has ever been vaccinated for rabies just once, even if it were 20 years earlier." He recommended doing it "at least once." Personally, if my horse had ever been vaccinated for rabies even once, I would run a titre before I ever did another rabies vaccine. It is also, however, my understanding that there is no rabies vaccine that is "labeled" for use in horses (i.e. the manufacturers of rabies vaccines have not done the necessary testing & paperwork to demonstrate that their vaccines are either safe or effective for use in horses). But I could be wrong about this. But if I am not, then the manufacturer is definitely not a good source of information with respect to how often to use it on your horse. kat Orange County, Calif. :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
